She passed away on June 11 after a sudden illness.
Her colleagues praised her, saying she was a born-teacher. They said while still doing primary education, Phakathi had a blackboard at home where she taught those who were younger.
Born on February 20 1960 in Phiritona, Heilbron in Free State, Phakathi matriculated with distinctions in English and Maths.
She then proceeded to Sefikeng Teachers Training College to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.
She studied for a Diploma in Primary Education.
Her first teaching job was temporary at her hometown of Heilbron at the Deweldrop Primary school. When an opportunity came she moved to Pitshala Public School on a permanent post.
Her dedication did not go unnoticed and she was recruited by Gobakwang Primary in North West as a head of department.
Phakathi obtained a BEd degree at the Rand Afrikaans University in 1982.
She leaves behind her two children - Sydney and Thuli.
She will be buried tomorrow after a funeral service at 4 Hadida place, Phase 1, Buhle Park in Ekurhuleni at 7am.
