Freedom Day came early for residents of 21 wards in the Modjadjiskloof area of the Greater Letaba municipality in Limpopo, who were given 265 new pit toilets.

Villages that benefitted include Sekgopo, Sehlakong, Madumeleng, Rapitsi, Medingeni, Las Vegas, Lomondekop, Mooketsi, Motsinong and Matshwi.

Up to now residents had to turn to the bush to respond to the call of nature.

The project is part of the Mopani district municipality's campaign against cholera, which has already claimed dozens of lives.

Greater Letaba mayor Joshua Matlou said the toilets would also restore the dignity of residents.

The toilets were built by Tsipa Development Services and Construction and were completed two months before the deadline.

For the sake of quality all the toilets were built from the ground, balanced with a concrete foundation and fitted with a vent-pipe for ventilation.

Khupane Sambo, a 71-year old disabled grandmother from Makhaveni in Sekgopo was ecstatic. She lives with her 10-year-old granddaughter and said the new toilets would improve their lives.
