Low blow

Sports is supposed to be the great equaliser. It is the one area where regardless of who you are or where you come from you can achieve greatness purely on your talent and application.

Sports is supposed to be the great equaliser. It is the one area where regardless of who you are or where you come from you can achieve greatness purely on your talent and application.

So we cannot help but rejoice when someone like boxer Edward Mpofu decides to load his gloves with plaster of Paris to gain an unfair advantage against his foe but is bust and banned for life.

For the record, Mpofu lost despite his unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Unfortunately, his trainer Eugene Khanyile escaped with a slap on the wrist, a 20-year ban or a mere R20000 fine. As if that were not bad enough, he may return to the ring as soon as he has paid half the fine, half of which was suspended for five years.
