A ballet of one of the oldest and best-known operas, LaTraviata,can be seen in Jozi at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Braamfontein until September 7. La Traviata is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire.

The ballet is choreographed and adapted by Veronica Paeper, and is accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

Based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, La Traviata tells the story of a Parisian courtesan (Violetta) who falls in love with a young aristocrat, but whose love is shattered by family duty and chronic illness. Alfredo Germont falls in love with Violetta, but his father disapproves. He fears that his naive son will ruin his reputation and his fortune so he persuades Violetta to end the relationship.

The ballet has been arranged by Allan Stephenson. It features dancers such as Angela Malan, Burnise Silvius, Lauryn Summerley and Anya Carstens. Michael Revie makes his debut as Alfredo (Violetta's beloved).
