A letter cannot heal infighting within the ANC

When history books are written, President Thabo Mbeki's name will be mentioned along with other great leaders of our continent because of the excellent work he has done for South Africa and Africa.

He has done much to dignify Africa. He proved that we can, and will think independently of those who have always tried to control our destiny. His achievements are well known.

We are proud that a leader of his calibre has emerged from our country, and prouder that he comes from the ANC, a movement we love and follow.

My concern is that infighting is tearing the movement apart. The leadership says there are no divisions and in trying to prove it we are referred to the letter Mbeki and Jacob Zuma wrote. It will take more than a letter to dispel the perception. Just after Polokwane, Zuma said that there were no ill feelings between him and Mbeki. He pledged that they would work together for a better future.

How unfortunate that we have not seen or heard Mbeki express the same sentiments. This would ease ANC members and supporters concerns.

We support the ANC, not individuals. We want individuals who will lead us. We should not be forced to take sides. Our enemies rejoice at the way things are.

I plead with Mbeki to apply the same energy he applies in healing differences between warring parties in Africa, which we support and encourage 100 percent.

Zuzu Mdluli, Johannesburg
