Inkatha Freedom Party member Mduduzi Buthelezi, not related to the IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, says he was attacked and evicted from the ANC-dominated Tuhuis hostel in Umlazi on Sunday because he was wearing an IFP T-shirt.
He said an angry mob attacked him and his room-mate while they were asleep. Had it not been for two good Samaritans among the attackers, he would not be alive to tell his story.
Buthelezi, 23, is now confined to a hospital bed with severe head injuries unable to move and barely able to talk.
He said his attackers were known ANC members who live in the ANC-dominated hostel.
"I was seen wearing the T-shirt during the day and at night in my hostel. Then all hell broke loose.
"Someone hit me with a stick, while another hit me with a hammer. My room-mate was also beaten. We got out and began to run but more people were waiting outside," said Buthelezi.
The attackers also threw out their belongings.
Buthelezi said two men from the mob grabbed him and threw him out of the hostel gate.
"I was bleeding as I ran. The group came after me but at the taxi rank two women helped me. "They called the police, who took me to the hospital. I have not heard from my friend," he said.
Yesterday, residents in the hostel remained tight-lipped as the situation was tense.
IFP eThekwini spokesman Joshua Mazibuko condemned the attacks.
"We are also aware that ANC activists at the same hostel have issued an order that every resident will have to be in Pietermaritzburg on August 4 when ANC president Jacob Zuma appears before the high court," he said.
