The department of public works in KwaZulu-Natal has come up with ways of regulating the property business in a bid to enable the small man to have a slice of the cake.

Provincial MEC for public works Lydia Johnson this week met landlords in the province to discuss what opportunities are available and to engage with women landlords on the challenges they are facing.

At the meeting it was decided that the property industry is still in the hands of a few and that there is still a lot to be done to spread the business and share opportunities .

The department has established a property charter that seeks to address the imbalances of the past by closing the gap between the first and second economy.

"The department has also initiated a programme called izandla ziyagezana, which is aimed at ensuring the clearance of vacant land.

"In this programme labour absorbing methods are used to ensure that short-term job opportunities are created," Johnson said.
