The police are offering a R25000 bounty for gangsters who have been terrorising backroom dwellers in townships around Ekurhuleni.

The reward comes after four thugs broke into rented backrooms, shot two men and raped a woman on Tuesday morning at Kaalfontein near Tembisa. The suspects are aged between 20 and 30.

Ivory Park police spokesman Superintendent Tobie Strauss said: "These men are armed and dangerous. They are targeting backroom dwellers. They break down the doors and shine flashlights at victims before robbing them.

"Any information brought forward will be dealt with privately."

In the first robbery the men shot a 50-year-old man in the head. He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

After that the gang went to a 30-year-old man's room and shot at him. The bullet grazed his head. He was treated and discharged from Tembisa Hospital.

In the third incident a 34-year-old man was pistol-whipped and his girlfriend raped.

Cellphones and cash were stolen in all the robberies.

Azapo national spokesman Dan Habedi said: "If the reward is being offered based on a person's colour, then it highlights how a black person's life is valued."

Strauss said: "The reward has nothing to do with whether the victims are black or white. Our budget does not allow us to go over this amount."

Only two suspects have been described. One is tall, dark in complexion with long bushy hair. The other is short, stocky and light in complexion. All four speak poor isiZulu, Strauss said.

Anyone with information can call Superintendent Tobie Strauss on 082-822-8032 or 082-455-5061
