We ask because of innumerable bloody disputes over routes that currently dog the industry across the country.

The question is prompted by public frustration at being used as cannon fodder in ongoing conflicts that reflect the industry as unwieldy and prone to sporadic bloodshed .

The continuing conflicts suggest a lack of trust in official dispute-resolution mechanisms or the authorities' failure to provide lasting solutions to wrangles over routes.

Whatever the cause of the various conflicts, the authorities should streamline interventions to stop the perennial taxi violence once and for all.
