A civil case in which a man is demanding a staggering R245billion - the highest ever in South African legal history - from Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula was postponed in the Johannesburg high court this week.
Judge J Labuschagne on Tuesday postponed the case to allow the complainant, Pokane Emmanuel Ledimo, 48, of Turffontein in Johannesburg, to forward reasons why he had delayed submitting his claim against the minister. The ministry is defending the lawsuit.
The judge said a new date for the case would be set down again once Ledimo had complied with the ruling.
Ledimo is suing the minister for R245billion for "unlawful arrests and detentions" he claims occurred more than five times in 2002.
In papers before court, Ledimo says the alleged wrongful arrests began in April 2002 when police first arrested him in Johannesburg.
On April 23 2002, Ledimo was arrested by the Booysens police for trespassing, theft, housebreaking and malicious damage to property.
Heinrich Valentine, of Routledge Modise Attorneys, said the lawsuit was South Africa's highest ever.
