A Gauteng councillor is facing three assault charges after allegedly attacking his secret lover, her husband and his younger brother.

The woman is married to a Mpumalanga home affairs official, Jonathan Mathebula (36), who is based in the Thulamahashe office.

The suspect, Billy Madungandaba, a councillor in Rivonia, north of Johannesburg, apparently drove all the way from Gauteng to Mpumalanga to visit the woman on Saturday.

Mathebula told Sowetan that he was surprised to see Madungandaba assaulting his wife at the Bushbuckridge shopping complex at about 3pm.

Vero Mgwenya, a mother of two girls aged four months and three years, admitted to Sowetan that she and Madungandaba were romantically involved. "I must just tell the truth, Madungandaba and I were engaged in a secret romance until he proved to me that he was a beast.

"He failed to respect my husband and assaulted both of us when my husband caught us together at the shopping complex," she said yesterday.

She claimed Madungandaba prevented her from getting out of his car in order to meet her husband. The husband had parked his car a short distance away.

"He suddenly became a monster saying he could not drive all the way from Johannesburg for nonsense, and we started arguing before he assaulted me."

She said she did not really love him but was just lonely because her husband used to neglect and starve her sexually.

Relating his ordeal, Mathebula said he had approached the scene with shock. "When I challenged the man about the assault of my wife, he turned on me.

"He punched me in my face and kicked me in the stomach as well as my private parts," said Mathebula yesterday.

He said his younger brother, James, also tried to intervene but Madungandaba assaulted him as well. Mathebula said his wife was beaten until she was unconscious.

Madungandaba allegedly jumped into his car and speedily drove off from the scene.

Mathebula managed to drive his wife to Mapulaneng Hospital where she received medical treatment .

Bushbuckridge police spokesman Inspector Nyiko Maluleka said three assault charges had been laid against Madungandaba.

Repeated attempts to speak to Madungandaba proved fruitless yesterday.
