The IFP-led Dannhauser municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal is investigating how a teacher at Mandlamasha Combined School won the school's gardening tender.

"We want to know how the teacher juggled two jobs that require so much attention," said the Dannhauser municipality spokesman Mvulane Mothahe.

Mothahe said the municipality was also investigating how Mandlamasha Combined School paid R24000 for computers and CCTV cameras without following the school's procurement procedures.

"There are many corrupt things happening at the municipality's schools, but at the moment we are focusing on Mandlamasha Combined School," said Mothahe.

"We plan to crack down heavily on corruption before it spreads."

Last month, the municipality suspended its manager, Bhekani Khawula, for falsifying his CV when he applied for his job.

Khawula was suspended after an investigation which was led by the provincial department of local government, housing and traditional affairs discovered that Khawula had lied in his job application.

He was also found to have given himself an unauthorised salary increase. Khawula increased his salary from R45000 to R55000 a month.

Last week, the municipality also joined forces with the Department of Social Welfare to crack down on fraudsters who prey on pensioners at pension pay-points.

The loan sharks and bogus funeral parlour outlets operating near the pension pay-points were forced to shut down because they "fraudulently" made pensioners to take policies and loans.
