Housing ideas get state support

Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu yesterday unveiled 10 houses built at an "innovation hub" in Soshanguve, Pretoria.

Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu yesterday unveiled 10 houses built at an "innovation hub" in Soshanguve, Pretoria.

The hub aims to give an opportunity to people who have innovative housing ideas to have their materials tested. If approved, the materials would be used to build the houses at the hub, where there are currently 200 stands.

If any innovations are approved, they would be financed by a bank. The 10 homes were built using some of the materials already approved, including metal, wood, concrete and meshed fences.

Sisulu said the hub should become a place of enlightenment, vision and creativity and added that "no half-baked shoddy work would be allowed".

Seventeen students were granted bursaries by the National Home Builders Registration Council to study construction and other related fields.

The hub is named after Eric Molobi, the former chairman of the National Housing Forum, who died last year.

"As a result of his efforts the housing subsidy was introduced and became the basis for the delivery of 2,4million houses to date," Sisulu said. - Sapa
