Police on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast are hunting for a gang who raped three women on New Year's Eve.

The gang is also suspected of robbing a middle-aged couple in the same area.

Police said the attack on the three women took place at a braai held to welcome in the New Year.

The women, aged between 18 and 21, had travelled from Durban to the coastal resort of Pennington to attend their friends' party.

The women and their two male friends were enjoying a braai beside a swimming pool when the three men, armed with firearms and a knife, attacked them.

Police spokesman Zandra Hechter said the gang forced their victims into a bedroom.

"They tied them up and repeatedly raped the three ladies and forced their friends to watch."

After raping the women, the gang robbed the group of their cellphones, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Hechter said that about an hour after the attack, a couple were attacked in their house, about a kilometre away from the first crime scene.

"The middle-aged couple were busy cleaning up after a braai when they were also approached by three men who forced them into their house."

The man's wife was assaulted and the couple were also robbed of all their valuables.

Police believe that there is a strong link between the two attacks.

lA middle-aged man was later taken in for questioning about the first case, Hechter said.
