While South Africa prepares to commemorate Women’s Month in August‚ a local burlesque dancer will take to the stage with 40 other dancers to raise funds for the NGO Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust.

The Grand Exhibition‚ conceptualised by Tenille Lindeque-Joshua also known as Lady Magnolia‚ will showcase the city’s top burlesque talent — from seasoned professional solo performers to troupe numbers from Cape Town’s longest standing burlesque companies.

Lindeque-Joshua said the art is filled with humour‚ satire and risqué flirtations. She started a dance school in 2010 with just 10 students. Today she has about 60 and said interest in the dance form has increased as it represents real women who want to embrace their sensuality.

“As burlesque dancers‚ we celebrate the beauty and strength of our bodies and our sexuality and I feel that it is our duty to try to extend that celebration beyond our immediate community‚” said Lindeque-Joshua.

With a passion for uniting the burlesque community for a good cause‚ the first Grand Exhibition event was hosted in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2015 and collectively the events raised over R98‚000 for Rape Crisis and the Breast Health Foundation.

“I personally know far too many women who have been victims of rape‚ sexual abuse and assault. Many women live in constant fear of attack and I believe that burlesque is the ideal medium for women to take back their power and autonomy over their bodies.”

The event takes place on August 5.

The Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust was started in 1976 and is the oldest organisation in the country ‘’supporting the recovery of survivors‚ seeking justice and making change in communities’’‚ according to its website.
