The art of depicting new SA - Kgosi looks at the past 20 years

VISUAL artist Kgosi Khumalo showcases the best of his work tonight at the Backyard Art Gallery in Kagiso, Mogale City.

Khumalo, 39, the founder of the award-winning gallery, has brought in the big guns in the form of renowned poet and artist Professor Pitika Ntuli to open the exhibition.

The paintings, themed "20 years of darkness and light", were created from a personal and universal viewpoint.

"I paint to contribute to the heritage of our country, at the same time making a living out of it," he says.

On display will be Khumalo's work spanning 20 years, coinciding with South Africa's democracy.

He works primarily in acrylic and mixed media, creating rich, sumptuous imagery of technical proficiency. He uses recycled materials to create texture.

"Looking back at the years I have been involved in the arts, I have painted conceptual pieces from the heart and some of my work I don't sell because I feel attached to it," Khumalo says.

Hesays most of the paintings on exhibition will be looking at the good and the bad of our democratic dispensation.

He has converted his mother's four-room house into a gallery which prides itself as the only township art gallery on the West Rand.

Khumalo draws inspiration from his mentors, Lefifi Tladi and Ntuli, who he says have persevered against all odds.

He currently teaches art at the Bosasa juvenile detention centre in Krugersdorp through his African Hope Arts Academy that he established in 2010.

Khumalo has exhibited nationally and internationally and won a number of awards.

His works can be found in the offices of big corporations such as SAB, the Development Bank of SA and at the offices of Mogale City.
