Job mixes boardroom and boots

HARD WORKER: Quantity surveyor Sandi Mbutuma
HARD WORKER: Quantity surveyor Sandi Mbutuma

THERE is never a dull moment for quantity surveys or Sandi Mbutuma when she is at work.

The 34-year-old is an executive director at Pentad QuantitySurveyors.

Quantity surveying deals with measuring the amount of material that will be needed for a construction project and cost implications.

"My job varies from week to week except for the last week of the month because I get claims from contractors as they want to get paid.

"I would then head to a construction site and check if the work they are claiming for is done," she says.

Mbutuma works on large-scale projects such as hospitals, hotels and shopping centres.

Being a company executive and a quantity surveyor sees her sometimes being dressed formally and at other times being in boots and overalls when she has to visit a site.

The importance of quantity surveyors is highlighted in government projects that sky-rocket in value when compared to the initial budget.

As an executive director she handles the business development of the company.

"I consult stakeholders in the industry to get new business for Pentad in organisations that we have never worked with," she says.
