New blood glucose monitors sync to smartphones, send data to the cloud

Considering hundreds of millions of people around the globe have diabetes, one of the biggest trends in digital health is connected portable blood glucose monitors that fit in your pocket, can take easy readings, and send your results automatically to your smartphone or store them in the cloud.

The latest offering in that space is Dario, a cloud-based mobile health platform that serves as an all-in-one glucose monitoring system. New York-based LabStyle Innovations plans to launch an iOS mobile app for the Dario on December 12 in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, reports TechCrunch. A palm-size glucose monitor, with a lancet, strips, and a meter, is also part of the package, and will be commercially available in Europe after a soft launch in early 2014.

Glooko is another cloud-based service that transfers glucose readings and related data from 17 Food and Drug Administration-approved meters to supported iOS or Android devices. Another option, iHealthLab is a portable Bluetooth-enabled blood glucose monitor that automatically sends your data to an iOS or Android device or the cloud.
