Make-up artist applies the foundation for his future

We seem to be followers rather than leaders. We have the potential to be the leaders. We should be the leaders in the industry.

28 year old, Zakhele Lucoh Mhlongo is the uber talented make-up artist who has moved on from giving mzansi’s celebrities their glam do to waving his magic wand over the faces of actors that are casted for major theatre productions, models that grace the catwalks, and those stepping up on stage to look fabulous to receive awards. But beyond that, this fast-tracked entrepreneur is not stopping there.

A local branded make-up product is tipped to be on its way with the perfect mix of local ingredients, the ‘much needed’ creativity that Lucoh believes will be the ideal answer to all South African women's prayers.

Mhlongo is looking to create his own local make-up brand to compete with the international market.

He says: “South Africa needs to realise its potential. We have the tendency for looking too local. We have all the resources to bring internationalism into our local products.

“Make- up products requires the right ingredients for that magical touch to make a person feel like a million bucks. So the missing ingredient right now, is that touch of local creativity, coupled with the international quality that locals can also bring to the party, will make the perfect make-up brand that will be ready to take on the likes of MAC, Revlon etc.

Mhlongo adds, “right now, we seem to be followers rather than leaders. We have the potential to be the leaders. We should be the leaders in the industry.

“Internationals must look to us and want what we have. It shouldn’t be the other way around.”

Plagued with talent, this youngster says there’s so much that I want to do but so little time in life for me to everything. For now, he will be busy working on the 'Lucoh Mhlongo Aesthetics' make-up brand.

We asked him what the winter make-up trends for 2013 are:

• The face needs to be well-covered but fresh. Conceal the imperfections and use a light foundation over the rest of the face. Add a light wash of bronzer around the outer edge of your skin for a warm effect.

• This winter its all about the lips. Use rich colours with nice depth. Play with the wines [referring to the colour, not the bottle. Although in winter that is also a good option]. He adds, there’s a shade for every skin colour, so go for it. Find the right shade for you

•   The eyes need to be as soft as possible. Mascara and a liner is a must, but then just go for a soft bronze on the crease of the eye for definition. Of course you need to also have very nice, defined brows. Neat, nice defined brows, he reiterated.

Recently, Mhlongo had judged the ‘I Can’ competition – looking for the best make-up artist in stores.

He had also added his touch to our Mzansi’s Sexiest calendar hotties in 2012, and is likely to be on board this year as well. - if he is not too busy chasing that perfect mix of ingredients for us women to look smoking hot.
