TALENTED: Tu Nokwe hails from KwaMashu in KZN.

"KwaMashu is where I can just be myself"

TU NOKWE is a multi-talented performing artist who has travelled the length and breadth of the globe entertaining thousands of followers.

The KwaMashu-born mother of one is an actress, singer, guitarist, composer, lyricist, cultural icon and teacher.

Born into one of South Africa's most famous musical families, who are sometimes called the Jacksons of Africa, Nokwe has mentored many talented individuals, among them, Deborah Fraser, Leleti Khumalo, Ayanda Nhlangothi and Khanyo Maphumulo.

She tells us about her place of birth, Durban.

What do you like about Durban?

Ulwandle! Though I can't swim I like the fact that I still enjoy staying at my parents' home in KwaMashu, where I can just be myself.

Walking barefeet and seeing people I grew up with and eat whatever is available; except meat.

What are your favourite restaurants in Durban and why?

Any restaurant that sells tasty vegetarian dishes, like the Krishna restaurant. There's another one near the Pine Street parking lot that sells bean roti - and it's cheap, hey!

Your favourite nightspot in Durban and why?

This will sound boring but I like to go to the beach to pray or meditate. I haven't been lucky to go out except when I'm down for work.

Oh, I remember ... there used to be a jazz venue in Pinetown called The Rainbow ... that was many years ago when we used to go out with our late dad (peace be upon him) during the days of our famous group, The Black Angels.

Favourite hotel, Spa or B&B in Durban and why?

I like Helena Bailey's B&B in Morningside and on the Bluff. One is called KhayaLembali.

She's got style. I love the Royal Hotel spa. They have a lovely thing going there.

Where do you worship when you are in Durban?

I go to G2 Eweseli yakwaMashu, ama Methodist. I still love their way of worshipping, which is traditional but still modern.

What makes Durban great?

Its beautiful people and the beaches, of course, make the city what it is.

Where do you chill with your friends in Durban?

I visit my friends at Esplanade, eMtateni and sometimes we go to eMhlanga to hang out and listen to beautiful music and reminisce.

Where would you go for entertainment as a tourist in Durban and why?

I take the kids to Shaka Marine. It's nice to watch them going wild - a very nice escape.

What are the important places to go to if you only have a weekend in Durban?

Do ask for the Nokwe House. Though it's not an official heritage site you'll be inspired to hear about the history of the Nokwe cultural activities and community development.

A lot of tourists like to go there; then move to eDube following the Heritage Route to Ohlange, the first black boarding school established by utat'uMafukuzela Dube.
