Jozi's musical tribute to Madiba

SOWETAN has thrown its full nation-building weight behind the Tribute Concert to Nelson Mandela.

The concert is the brainchild of Ukhamba, producers of popular SABC1 music shows Imizwilili and Rootz.

The show, which is scheduled for the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, Johannesburg, on July 31, honours Madiba's selflessness, humili-ty, ubuntu and yearning for freedom.

The repertoire also honours other freedom stalwarts who shared the dreams of South Africa's first democratically elected presi-dent.

The concert celebrates Madiba during his birthday month, while capturing living oral art, African music's tapestry and educating and capturing history through song.

This tribute features the Gauteng Choristers, Kopano Chorus, Voices of the Nation, Mzansi Choir and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

It is both nation-building partners' unique way of contributing to the burgeoning Nelson Mandela Day movement that is due to be marked worldwide on July 18, Madiba's birthday. Mandela turns 93 on Monday.

Sowetan's involvement is in line with the unity, brotherhood and goodwill ideals of former editor in chief Aggrey Klaaste, who led the Sowetan's nation-building campaign until his death in June 2004

Ukhamba head Ali Mpofu conceived the tribute after he had learnt that Madiba and his comrades used to stage their own "concerts", during which they would sing a cappella songs.

Almost everyone knows the famous Madiba Shuffle or Madiba Jive, inspired by Mandela's response to choral music renditions.

The inaugural tribute concert in Cape Town in June was held jointly with Artscape Theatre.

The entertainers were Joyful Harmonies, Simon Estes, Heavenly Voices, Cape Peninsula University of Technology Choir, Pro Canto Choir, Abavuki Marimba and Jazz band and poet Zolani Mkiva, who will to join the Gauteng tribute.

Songs lined up for the show include Simon Bhekathini Phelelani Mnomiya's Kuhle Kwethu, Siyabonga Maqhawe and Ziyeza Izingqulungqulu, Masiza's Vukani Mawethu, Matshikiza's Hamba Kahle, young Themba Madlopha's From Apartheid To Freedom and Khumalo's Insizw'endala.

  • Other corporate sponsorships and nation-building partnerships are welcome.
