South African youths debate world problems at the UN

SOUTH Africa's political movers and shakers of the future are currently taking part in the yearly Model United Nations International Schools Debating Conference in New York in the United States.

They are Mirriam Nkosi, Samantha Dhladhla, Ayanda Khoza and Stuart Aston from Mpumalanga; Patrick Hannan from Eastern Cape, Tshepang Afrika from Free State, Shaakirah Madhi from Gauteng; Anele Nzimande from KwaZulu-Natal; Shruthi Thomas from Limpopo; Samantha Bekebeke from Northern Cape; Boitumelo Likhethe from North West and Rachel Bolton from Western Cape.

The debates aim to educate the young participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the UN agenda

Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult and then develop solutions to world problems.

The South African version of the Model United Nations Debates, which is organised by Education Africa and administered by the university-students led academic developers Model United Nations-South Africa, is sponsored by MTN, who also back the national winners' overseas excursions.
