A step against breast cancer

AGNES Ngobeni has taken part in the Avon Justine iThemba Walkathon every year since she was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.

"I walk every year because I am happy to have survived and to encourage other women with breast cancer to have faith," Ngobeni said.

Ngobeni, 47, of Pimville, Soweto, joined more than 15000 participants for the fifth annual 8km walk, which started at Marks Park Sports Complex in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, to raise awareness about breast cancer.

She said she was lucky that the cancer was detected early and both her breasts were saved.

"I didn't think it could be cancer because I did not have lumps in my breasts."

Ngobeni underwent a mammogram after a brown discharge started coming out of her nipples.

"I was the first person to be diagnosed with cancer in my family. It was a shock to everyone but they learnt to live with it," Ngobeni said.

Survivors in pink sashes and T-shirts braved the morning chill and led the walk. Participants walked with friends, children and some with dogs, sporting pink bandannas.

Members of breast cancer support group Bosom Buddies dedicated the walk to plastic surgeon Gereth Edwards, who was recovering from a heart attack.

Debbie Firer, 47, of Atholl, said Edwards had performed reconstructive surgery on her when she had both breasts removed following her diagnosis seven years ago.

Firer walked with her sister, Michelle Rivera, who was also diagnosed with cancer nine years ago.

"It has enriched my life. I now appreciate every sunset and the flowers in spring," Firer said.

Senate Moremoholo, 29, of Randburg, said he took part in the walk to show that men were also affected by breast cancer. "Some people do not know that men can also get breast cancer."
