Isibaya star Bheki Mkhwane returns to theatre after he ditched it for television.

Mkhwane, known for his role as Samson Ndlovu on the Mzansi Magic soapie, goes back to his first love after a four-year break.

He returns with the internationally acclaimed smash hit, Woza Albert, starring alongside another talented TV actor, Hamilton Dhlamini.

The play, which is about the second return of Morena (Jesus Christ), is set to have a brief season at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani next month.

Woza Albert was written in the early 1980s by Percy Mtwa, Barney Simon and Mbongeni Ngema.

Mkhwane tells Sowetan that he agreed to be part of the classical play because he wanted to be part of the legacy. He said Woza Albert was still the only local theatre production that toured the world for four years, packing theatres.

"I agreed to be part of the play because it will be staged in a township theatre. Furthermore, we are also going to perform for school kids and engage them afterwards," Mkhwane says.

"It is the first time I will be part of the show. I always loved it because it is creatively told."

The seasoned actor explains that Woza Albert was one of the unique plays told with improvisation from the actors.

Mkhwane believes that the play will remain relevant even after apartheid ended because it makes people think.

"We need to understand who are the leaders and what has gone wrong. We used to have leaders who knew their responsibilities. But now we don't have leaders anymore, whether it's in churches or in the community. We have run out of leaders.

"It is important to bring back the show again to make reference and see where we are coming from and where we are going."
