Big bash to celebrate music legends

A 10-HOUR music spectacular will bring together more than 30 South African artists from three decades at one venue.

This year's instalment of the Hansa Festival of Legends will have a different twist with tribute performances by Bongani Fassie to his late mother Brenda Fassie and Boom Shaka reuniting to perform a tribute to late member Lebo Mathosa.

Brenda Fassie died on May 9 2004. Mathosa, who was in Boom Shaka with Theo Nhlengethwa, Thembi Seete and Junior Sokhela, died in a car accident on October 23 2006.

Hansa's general manager Khensani Nobanda said: "This year's festival is a celebration of artists from years gone by and [who] have left their mark on the South African music scene. It will also showcase today's hottest talent and some of our country's upcoming stars."

Nobanda said fans can expect to see performances by Khuli Chana, Zakes Bantwini, Amu, The Muffinz, Spikiri, plus 30 more artists.

Speaking on behalf of the Boom Shaka group, Seete said she was very excited and grateful for the opportunity to perform in memory of their beloved friend and colleague.

"We love her dearly," she said.

"I celebrate Lebo's life every day, talk about her and play her music. Even the radio stations have an appreciation for her work and celebrate her creativity and play her music. She also helped start a lot of young people's careers.

"We have also planned to do a collaboration with Zaki Ibrahim [Canadian born singer/songwriter]," said Seete, adding that they were excited about the collaboration.

Ibrahim could not hold back her excitement about the collaboration with Boom Shaka.

"Fans should expect high energy and I assure them they will take pleasure in celebrating the classics of the South African music industry," Ibrahim said.

The festival will be held at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on March 23 from 2pm.
