An album to be really proud of

TALENTED: Sifiso Khanyile
TALENTED: Sifiso Khanyile

IT'S A combination of everything that makes good music - perseverance, determination passion and maturity. Sifiso Khanyile is a case in point.

Music is Everywhere is Khanyile's first album.

Born in Mbali Township, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, into a musical family. He attributes his love of music to the many moments he spent singing with his mother in her bedroom.

"The sounds that I heard when I was growing up have been the biggest inspiration for this album, the sweet and soft voices of my mother and sister singing at family gatherings," he says.

The Durban University of Technology graduate majored in voice, composition, arranging and harmony. This is evident in the well rounded sound of Music Is Everywhere.

After graduating, Khanyile moved to Johannesburg in 2002 to pursue his dream. In 2004 he met the talented Sibongile Khumalo (founder of Magnolia Vision Records), who moulded him into what he is today.

"I conceived this album one day while I was taking a walk and there they were: two women singing, a man with his headphones on his bike and myself listening to my own music," he chuckles.

Ubala, one of the songs, talks about the waiting process people have to go through in life.

"It could be waiting to sign a record deal, giving your portfolio to prospective employers, or even hoping that a girl or guy will call you back and it all comes down to nothing," he says.

The only way to describe the debut album is, it is a combination of everything. His music is elegant, stylish and it's for modern folks.

"I don't write music with certain types of people in mind. I simply follow my heart. One day in Norway, I was listening to people playing beautiful music and I asked myself if they had me in mind when they wrote the music. I didn't even understand the language, but I felt it," he says.

Khanyile has worked alongside Joyous Celebration, Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Jabu Khanyile (no relation), Duma Ka-Ndlovu in the Musical The Journey, Swazi and Sibongile Khumalo among others.

Khanyile says his next album won't be out any time soon because he wants this first one to have longevity and to be enjoyed.
