Music is back at Morula Sun

THERE is something encouraging happening at Morula Sun this weekend, after a long period of musical drought at this resort outside Pretoria.

It used to be a place that buzzed with music, particularly jazz, in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

But when live jazz dwindled at most venues in the country, Morula Sun followed, with no concert of note taking place there for a long time.

Those were the years when pioneering jazz label Sheer Sound was home to South African contemporary jazz, housing almost every jazz musician.

It was the same label that published the likes of the late Sipho Gumede, Gloria Bosman, Paul Hanmer, McCoy Mrubatha, Louis Mhlanga, and many others.

This label, used to take jazz music outside the confines of the studio by organising live performances of this beautiful music genre, calling the gigs-Sheer All Stars concerts.

Morula Sun was one of the preferred venues for hosting these gigs.

Then something happened with Sheer Sound, and the label stopped releasing jazz artists like it used to do, and with that the hosting of gigs at Morula Sun stopped.

On Saturday, March 3, that musical drought will come to an end with Sister Promotions putting together a music event , Up in Smoke Concert, at Morula Sun.

Those who are part of the lineup include Bricks, Teargas, Character (featuring Professor), DJ Cleo, Moporofeta and Kapa Kapa.

Others include Eddie Zondi, Paul Mtirara, Wilson B Nkosi (all from Metro FM), DJ Pierre (Channel O) and club DJs Mad Cow, Muzi GP and Tazman.

With this concert, the old jolly good days of music are back once more at the resort.
