New broom at Soweto TV

SEASONED radio personality Kgomotso "KG" Moeketsi , who has just been appointed manager of community television station Soweto TV, has vowed to clean it up.

The Soweto-based station, which has 2.3-million viewers, has in the past been criticised for some of its content - which has sometimes bordered on fiction rather than fact.

A case in point is its religious content, where suspicious content is sometimes broadcast to the Soweto community by shady characters wooing the unsuspecting faithful.

"As the station manager and editor-in-chief, I am responsible for all content that is broadcast.

"My immediate task in the short term is to look at the station's content, and make it slicker and credible.

"If we are to broadcast any content that influences the community in one way or the other, we will make sure it is credible and factual.

"We are going to review the programming, including that of Pastor Mbhoro, and see what sort of financial obligation we have.

"I am still studying a whole range of agreements with content producers.

"People must not expect changes tomorrow though, as I have a lot of work to do first," she said.

Moeketsi, who resigned from the Media Diversity and Development Agency as manager in the chief executive officer's office, said she was passionate about her new job, and had the necessary management skills and experience to lead the station successfully.

A source at the station told Sowetan that Moeketsi was warmly received when she was introduced to the staff on Monday.

"She was well received by staff at the station, and she came out as someone serious and professional," said a source, who asked not to be named.

Moeketsi, who has a weekend slot at Radio 2000, said she did not intend giving it up.
