Kwela Tebza magic

AFTER winning the best urban pop album award at the Samas, afro-pop group Kwela Tebza will be rocking the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz on August 27 in Newtown.

Their performance will be graced by leading local and international acts, including Oliver Mtukudzi, Olufemi (Nigeria), Bonga (Angola) and Tania Maria from Brazil.

The trio comprises brothers Mpho, Tebogo and Tshepo Lerole, who all started performing at an early age on the penny whistle, which is their trademark sound.

The brothers are expected to perform some of their best songs, which managed to capture the limelight at the SA Music Awards this year. The brothers, born and bred in Diepkloof, Soweto, believe their music, which was influenced by their late father Ellias Lerole, is a continuation of the legacy he left.

"We see ourselves as custodians of the kwela heritage, our family legacy, and also the legacy of the whole country ... and we kept this in mind during the recording of King Kwela."

Group manager Tyson Mqoma said: "We are very excited about Kwela Tebza having been chosen to perform at the event. We believe this will give them an opportunity to showcase their talent before an international audience."
