985 is back to take hip-hop to higher level

HIP-HOP group 985's latest album, Re Dial 985, will bring a breath of fresh air to the South African music scene.

After releasing Kutlwa in 2005, the trio from Diepkloof, Soweto, have decided to make a strong comeback to the music industry.

The group consists of Gimboss, Junya Skillz and Dru. Their latest CD, Re Dial 985, is taking hip-hop to another level.

"We have new elements of the urban beats. Most importantly, our lyrics are inspired by township life, such as poverty, pride and inspiration," Junya Skillz said.

"We also write about our own experiences since our main mission is to motivate our own people."

In Re Dial 985 the group has worked with the best producers, such as Dome, who has produced Ishmael, Psyfo, Tepee and Paul Kekana.

"We have been out of the industry for some time and we have decided to re-launch ourself with a new album and Drastik as our new producer."

Skillz said this time around they had opted to sign under an independent label called Unreleased Records.

"We decided to go for a small company because we felt we were sharing the same vision," he said. "Sometimes you go to big labels but once you get there you find they don't give a damn about you.

"This project has taken us some time to produce and I believe our fans will be happy."

The group said they started playing together at a young age and since then, their sound had evolved.

"We started playing together at a young age. That is why we believe our music has got some thing in common with us, which is compassion and pride."
