Nondy eyes power of the wind

SHE is not only a total package of beauty and brains but Miss Earth SA 2010 winner is passionate about the environment and green lifestyle.

Last Saturday Nondyebo Dzingwa was crowned South Africa's greenest beauty, beating 21 other contestants to the top spot at the conclusion of the eighth anniversary of this event.

The annual beauty pageant was held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. She went away with prizes worth more than R700,000, including a car.

Miss Earth is an international beauty pageant that promotes environmental awareness. Each contestant declared their own personal environmental campaigns, with the theme for this year's competition focusing on green lifestyles.

The 24-year-old's polished stage presence, bewitching charm and regal bearing and the expression of correct sentiments about our environment was irresistable.

Though everyone swore by her great looks, Dzingwa says she did not think she was going to make it that far.

"I think that any of us could easily have been crowned that night, given the right time at the right place. All of us were voted for by people because they believed we were intelligent, beautiful women, that we would make perfect ambassadors for the preservation and conservation of the environment, not only in our own towns but also in the entire country," she said.

Nicknamed Nondy, the pretty one, originally from Mthatha, says she wants to promote renewable energy in the rural areas.

"I believe South Africa needs to harness its natural resources, such as wind power, in order to electrify rural areas, while simultaneously reducing the emission of greenhouse gasses," she said graciously.

Nondy said she would educate people about taking care of the environment throughout her reign.

"I am proud of my association with a much-sought-after title. I am happy that I am playing my role as part of the solution to our environmental problems. I am very excited about this opportunity. This will open doors for me to educate ordinary people about what I value most, the environment."

Nondy will now represent South Africa at the International Miss Earth pageant to be held in Vietnam, South East Asia, on December 4.
