Igesund explains Khumalo exit

Gordon Igesund says he could not sacrifice a youngster who was doing well just to give former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo game time at SuperSport United.

Khumalo left to join Bidvest Wits last week after failing to break into the team ahead of 19-year-old defender Denwin Farmer, who has been doing pretty well in central defence alongside Clayton Daniels.

"I just could not have a high-profile player like Bongani not playing on a regular basis. He needs to play regularly so a decision was made between him and the club," Igesund said.

"I've got young Denwin Farmer playing at the moment, so my choice was that I am going to have a high-profile player on the bench. Or I am going to have a high-profile player keeping out a youngster who is actually doing well? I am not a coach who is going to play the big names. I have got to be fair and honest with my players.

"Denwin deserves his spot. It [the move to Wits] was a decision made by Khumalo and the club and I wish him all the best," the coach added.

Igesund will also allow striker Phumelele Bhengu, who was top scorer in the National First Division with 22 goals last season, to go out on loan this month to get game time. Bhengu has only played 32 minutes in three substitute appearances since joining the club from Thanda Royal Zulu.
