DREAMER: Thabo Nthethe switches to Downs.
DREAMER: Thabo Nthethe switches to Downs.

BAFANA Bafana defender Thabo Nthethe describes his surprise move to big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns as the realisation of "a long-held dream".

Nthethe (29) quit Bloemfontein Celtic, where he was captain, to join the Brazilians on a four-year deal believed to be worth just over R10-million.

"It's a dream come true. I've always made it clear that I wanted to leave for a bigger club in Gauteng," said Nthethe.

"Sundowns is one of the best clubs - they want to win trophies - and I want to take my career to another level."

In August, Nthethe signed a three-year deal with Celtic, saying he wanted to end his career with the Free State outfit, for which he's played for 10 years. "I was hoping to end my career at Celtic, but I want to thank them for contributing to my success," Nthethe said.

Celtic chief executive Khumbulani Konco said Nthethe had told the club that he wanted out on his return from the African Nations Championship.

"Mr Cool [Nthethe] served Celtic with aplomb, that is why we did not waste time when Sundowns approached us."

Celtic have replaced Nthethe with Alfred Ndengane, from National First Division side FC Cape Town.

"Alfred is ready to fill those shoes," said Konco.

Celtic have also signed Zambian defender Davies Nkausu, from Supersport United, and Blessing Ngomezulu, another defender, from University of Pretoria.

Sundowns have released midfielder Jabulani Shongwe to Bidvest Wits, and Thamsanqa Sangweni to Ajax Cape Town, both on loan until June.

Downs have also snatched up Kudakwashe Mahachi, one of the best players during the African Nations Championship.

Moroka Swallows have acquired midfielder Vuyisile Wana from Santos, and Bongolethu Jayiya joined Maritzburg United on loan from Wits.

Platinum Stars have loaned defender Rofhiwa Tshikovhi to Polokwane City, and acquired striker Gift Sithole from Golden Arrows.

Rise and Shine have recruited midfielder Jabulani Maluleke and defender Thabiso Hlalele from Jomo Cosmos.

Matsatsantsa a Pitori have signed Thamsanqa Teyise from AmaZulu.

The talked-about move of Senegalese Issa Sarr from Dikwena to Orlando Pirates did not happen.

"[We] don't know where the rumour came from," said Pirates.
