Mpengesi shuts door on face of more experienced coaches

Chippa United chairman Siviwe "Chippa" Mpengesi has vowed he will never hire an experienced coach again, revealing that employing seasoned German-born Ernst Middendorp remains his biggest regret.

Though he is known for firing coaches at the drop of a hat, he is one of a few football bosses who have shown faith in less experienced and home-grown coaches.

"I was a security guard but someone believed in me and gave me an opportunity. I also do not hesitate to give people opportunities to prove themselves. For me it is about potential more than experience," Mpengesi told Sowetan.

"We need to have faith in our former players and young coaches who have potential. We would not have coaches like Pitso Mosimane today if they were not given opportunities. That was the biggest mistake to hire a coach like him [Middendorp]. We were almost relegated."

He has promised it was the last time his club was coached by an experienced tactician.

"They [experienced coaches] want to run clubs by themselves. They don't respect people like us who don't have football background. I do not think at Chippa I will ever have one of those. I want to build my own coaches,'' he added.

Chippa previously had Roger Sikhakhane and Dan Malesela at the helm. Teboho Moloi is the latest to guide the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.

"Sikhakhane did not even have coaching qualifications, but I gave him a chance."

"Dan was never recognised and had never worked at any top-flight club before. I saw something in him, now he is counted among top coaches. Who knew that Moloi would be a coach? He was an assistant [coach] for many years. In fact, when I got him he was even unemployed."
