"Sundowns are undisputedly the best team in the country" - Gavin Hunt

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is a hard man to please and he was still not happy after his charges' 5-0 roasting of basement dwellers Baroka FC on Wednesday night.

It was Wits' second consecutive 5-0 league win at home - they also handed out the same hiding to Ajax Cape Town two weeks ago - and yet you'd have been forgiven for thinking the home side had lost the game.

Coupled with the 3-1 CAF Champions League win against Saint-Louisienne over the weekend and the 3-1 victory against Free State Stars on December 17‚ Wits have scored 16 goals at home in four matches with only two conceded.

That's some effort from the log leader‚ but that's not enough for Hunt.

“If you look at the paper‚ it'll say it was a good result for us but we didn't play as well as we can because I thought we were too much on the back foot‚" Hunt said.

"We could have played better and made more chances‚ but the result is of high importance.

"But I'm not sure whether it was a good performance.

"It's not something I'm happy with.

“In this game and the Ajax game‚ we've had to close the goal difference and SuperSport have been scoring.

"I once won a league title on goal difference so I know what it's about.

"There are four to five teams that can win this league.

"It's going to be close so squad rotation‚ consistency and using the squad well are going to be important.”

Mamelodi Sundowns looms large on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld and not even the two games in hand over Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City give Hunt reason to sleep well.

Sundowns have six games in hand in fifth place and they are only four points adrift.

In the event of a Sundowns win‚ Wits can't be caught by Pitso Mosimane's side but Chiefs‚ SuperSport United and Cape Town City will be beneficiaries of that result.

On paper‚ SuperSport and Cape Town City have relatively easy away assignments against Highlands Park and Baroka FC on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Chiefs have to make the trek to Cape Town to face the struggling Ajax Cape Town on Saturday night.

Hunt is not concerned by what the other team's do‚ but a vengeful Sundowns side could inflict maximum damage.

Wits thrashed them 3-0 in the MTN8 final.

“We can't even compare to them.

"They won the league by 14 points and they've won two major titles outside of the country and that's unbelievable.

"They're undisputedly the best team in the country.

"We know the task at hand and we know the team we will be playing against.

"They'll be hurting from the last time we played them‚ so we're under no illusions as to what we're up against.

“If you look at the games and points that are available‚ we're playing against a side whom the league is there's to lose.

"What they've done is unbelievable so we've got great respect and humility going into the game.

"However‚ it's a game and it's part of the calendar and we're looking forward to it.

"We know what we have to succeed on the big stage.” - TMG Digital
