Uganda international left-back on trial at BidVest Wits

BidVest Wits’ continued search for a new left-back has seen them take Uganda international Joseph Ochaya on trial and indications are he has impressed so far.

Wits are seeking a replacement for experienced Zimbabwean Onismor Bhasera‚ who left the club at the end of last season to move to SuperSport United‚ even though they have a number of other options in the squad already.

Sifiso Hlanti slotted into that role with aplomb in the second half of last season‚ while Pentjie Zulu has also been signed from Jomo Cosmos.

Junior international Tebogo Moerane and veteran Dillon Sheppard are also options‚ though the latter is to be used sparingly this season.

Wits CEO Jose Ferreira confirmed that Ochaya was on trial at the club and said he had been impressive so far.

“He’s still here and there hasn’t been any decisions made about him yet‚ but he has looked pretty good‚” Ferreira told Times Media Digital.

Ochaya can play as a winger as well‚ though he is more comfortable in the fullback position.

He plays for Kampala City Council in his homeland‚ but previously had a two-year spell with Ghana giants Asante Kotoko. He also spent one season playing in Vietnam for Navibank Saigon.

The 22-year-old was voted Player of the Season at KCC in the last campaign and is highly-rated by Uganda national team coach Micho Sredojevic‚ once of Orlando Pirates‚ who recently described him as the best player in the country.

Ochaya was the hero when Uganda secured a first ever away win in World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 success over Togo last November‚ netting the only goal of the game with a glancing header.

He will be involved for his country in the next stage of the qualifiers after they were drawn with Ghana‚ Egypt and Congo-Brazzaville in their pool.

Uganda are also still very much in the hunt for qualification for the 2017 African Nations Cup‚ with victory in their next home match against minnows Comoros Islands likely enough to book a berth in Gabon. - TMG Digital
