SuperSport chief scout on Limpopo mission

SuperSport United chief scout Godfrey Mosoetsa has spotted many a talent but he has also missed out on signing others over the years.

Mosoetsa, who's been scouting for players for Matsatsantsa since 2001, has spotted players such as Masibusane Zongo, Kermit Erasmus, Kamohelo Mokotjo and Ramahlwe Mphahlele just to name a few from various tournaments.

In 2005, he could have added Reyaad Pieterse to his impressive list of recruits but the latter moved on to play for other teams.

"People don't know this, but I first saw Reyaad in 2005. It was during a tournament and Ronwen Williams was playing for our U15 team while Reyaad played for Phumelela. Both are born in 1992," recalled Mosoetsa from the sidelines of the SAB U21 Championships currently underway at Oscar Mpheta Stadium at the University of Limpopo.

Factors outside of football prevented Pieterse from joining SuperSport United and he moved on to play for other teams, while Williams has gone on to become a regular feature for the senior team.

"During that time we wanted players to stay at the academy and if you needed to have two sessions a day, you were able to do that. Reyaad couldn't because there are certain players whom the parents will say they want their children at school and not the academy. The core of our team was based at the academy, so things didn't work out with Reyaad but I'm pleased that he is back," he continued.

And with this in mind, Mosoetsa knows very well that he's going to spot talented players at the SAB U21 Championships but many will not make it to SuperSport United's academy let alone the senior team due to many factors.

"Never mind the first team, we already have Mondli Mpoto who is playing for the U20 national team and he was born in 1998, so when I come here I should be looking for a goalkeeper who is going to push Mondli but he should be born in 1998 and not older than Mondli," Mosoetsa.

"Some people would say, 'Godfrey didn't see that goalkeeper from Free State, so he can't spot talent'. No, I can see but he should fit in into our teams from the MDC (Multichoice Diski Challenge) to the academy age wise, etc," he added.

Some players that have shown tremendous ability at the tournament include Limpopo midfielder Frank Phuti Motebejane and Gauteng's Tiyiselani 'Scara' Makhubele.
