Marc van Heerden, probably more than anyone so far in the Bafana Bafana Cosafa Cup squad, has put his name forward as a potential call-up for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia in Durban on June 13.

Overlooked, apart from two caps, despite being a consistently solid defender with a sweet left foot for AmaZulu, Van Heerden was the stand-out player in the disappointing 7-6 penalties defeat against Botswana in Sunday's quarterfinal at Moruleng Stadium.

Van Heerden's name would now seem more firmly up with strong left-backs in Sibusiso Khumalo, Patrick Phungwayo and Thabo Matlaba for the Bafana left-back jersey.

"We've got a lot of talented players in this country, and a lot of good full-backs both left and right," he said yesterday, after a training session at Mogwase Stadium ahead of tonight's plate semifinal against Malawi.

"It's just a matter of doing the best for your country, whoever wears the jersey. That's my philosophy.

"Whenever I put it on for club or country it's about giving your best for what you love to do."

If Van Heerden is on the verge of an international breakthrough, it might make for an even tougher decision for the 27-year-old ahead of the season ahead for relegated AmaZulu.

Van Heerden has already admitted to being undecided yet on whether to follow Usuthu to the National First Division.

"At the moment I'm here and concentrating on the national team," Van Heerden said.

"[But] as a player you want to play top-flight football. It doesn't matter who you are around the world, if a Man United were to get relegated, the players would still want to play top-flight football."
