Ajax Cape Town formally qualified on Wednesday to compete in next year's African club competition when Mamelodi Sundowns made sure of a top-two place and a berth in the 2016 African Champions League.

Ajax will go to the African Confederation Cup as the Nedbank Cup qualifiers irrespective of whether they win the cup final in Port Elizabeth next weekend.

Newly crowned champions Kaizer Chiefs have already qualified for the Champions League, but there is still one more last place up for grabs in African club competition next year.

A third place in the Premier Soccer League ensures a berth in the Confederation Cup, and this is up for grabs tomorrow on the last day of the season.

Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits are level on points going into the last round of matches, with the Buccaneers away at Ajax Cape Town and Wits hosting Platinum Stars.

The Buccaneers have a much better goal difference, so the only way the Clever Boys can qualify is if they pick up more points than Pirates.

Both clubs played in this year's Confederation Cup with Bucs through to the fourth round next weekend, but Wits was knocked out early in February in embarrassing circumstances.

Wits sent out a reserve team in the second leg of their first-round tie against Royal Leopards of Swaziland and allowed a three-goal lead slip to be knocked out on penalties.

Pirates' chances of a second-place finish in the PSL evaporated on Wednesday night when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Maritzburg United.

Ajax chairman Ari Efstathiou said he was excited at the prospect of playing in the Confederation Cup next season, even if the costs would be hard to absorb.
