In the wake of Orlando Pirates' nasty refereeing experience in Lubumbashi two years ago, Mamelodi Sundowns' supporters will be keeping a close eye on the performance of referee Bamlak Tessema Weyesa.

The Ethiopian referee has been appointed to take charge of the Brazilians' crunch African Champions League tie against TP Mazembe Englebert on Sunday.

Weyesa is among the continent's elite panel, having officiated at the recent Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea. The 34-year-old, who has been on the Fifa panel for the last six years, handled one group match in Malabo at the tournament without any controversy.

He was also in South Africa last year at the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) finals.

Two years ago, Seychelles referee Bernard Camille handed Mazembe two penalties and a host of other favourable calls in the return leg of their knockout round match against Pirates in the Champions League.

The late Senzo Meyiwa' heroics in goal ensured a famous against-all-odds triumph for the Buccaneers.

Kaizer Chiefs' match in Morocco against Raja Casablanca on Sunday night is to be handled by Malang Diedhiou of Senegal.

Diedhiou handled their match last year in the African Confederation Cup when they lost to ASEC Abidjan of the Ivory Coast.

Diedhiou was also on the panel at the recent Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea and at the Chan event last year.

Gabon referee Eric Otogo, who took charge of the first leg between Chiefs and Raja in Durban, now goes to Kampala to officiate the meeting between URA FC and Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
