Hunt: I can't see Chiefs losing title

GAVIN Hunt is not echoing the sentiments of the coaches who have already conceded the Absa Premiership title to Kaizer Chiefs, but the Bidvest Wits coach does admit it is highly unlikely any team can catch Amakhosi.

Hunt said third-placed Wits' focus is to try to win their own matches, hopefully putting some sort of pressure on the rampant Chiefs to slip up.

"Obviously 15 points is a lot," Hunt said. "But ja, we'll keep going and take it one game at a time and take it from there. There's not much else we can do about it.

"Mathematically, it's still possible [to catch Chiefs]. They lost an 11-point lead last year, but I can't see them losing 15 points this year."

Hunt does not believe Chiefs' metronomic form has made it hard for coaches of chasing teams to maintain players' motivation. "I don't think it has anything to do with motivating your players. I think you've just got to try and do your own thing. Sixty points is always the benchmark, generally.

"Sundowns won it with more last year because they had that 11-game unbeaten run at the end."

It has been a frustrating season for Wits, with their experienced squad, excellent management, facilities and technical staff.

Hunt bemoaned the changes of some 16 playing personnel in a start to the season where the Clever Boys could not find consistency. "We're always up there at the end because we keep things simple, play to a pattern, don't vary things much," the coach said.

Hunt hopes Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra, at Wits on a short-term loan before returning to India's Atletico de Kolkata next season, can help accelerate a scoring record of 20 goals in 18 games.
