Pirates fans' violence mirrors SA society

THE excitement and a new dawn in South African soccer that has been made possible by Bafana Bafana was spoiled by violent Orlando Pirates supporters who threw all sorts of missiles at their coach Vladimir Vermezovic after Pirates' 1-2 loss to Maritzburg United on Tuesday night.

The violence we witnessed at FNB Stadium that night is a true reflection of the violence that dominates our society. Good people across sporting codes must speak out against this madness that will destroy our football. This ugly incident happened during the 16 Days Against Violence on Women and Children. Violence will always beget violence.

Communities resort to violence instead of protesting with their votes. Libraries and schools are burnt down whenever there are service delivery protests. Mass protests and demonstrations always end up with people's businesses and properties going up in smoke.

In our schools pupils have become bullies and carry knives and guns. How do we expect our stadiums to be different?

Vermezovic might have blundered by replacing Kermit Erasmus with Lehlohonolo Majoro, but there was no need for such an overreaction.
