Celtic, Aces play to a draw, Banyana win

BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic drew 1-all with Mpuma- langa Black Aces in their season-opening Absa Premiership home fixture here yesterday.

Despite having everything going for them - ball possession, support from their vociferous supporters as well as better chances of the two sides - the home side simply failed to win.

In fact, it was the visitors who took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Tendai Ndoro put them in front. A clever flick by recent signing Collins Mbesuma caught the Celtic defence napping, and from a very tight angle, Ndoro fired home the opener.

The two teams went to the interval with Aces leading. Celtic coach Ernst Middendorp was raving on the touchline, either for his players failing to execute his commands or from match officials.

A double substitution by Middendorp at the restart - bringing on Lerato Lamola and Tumelo Mogapi for Ruben Cloete and Lyle Lakay, respectively, pushed Phunya SeleSele into top gear. Then six minutes later, Gabadinho Mhango took a shot on goal, which deflected off an AmaZayoni defender, but goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro managed to save.

The attempt appeared to have breathed life into the home side, and they drew level in the 54th minute through Joel Mogorosi.

l Khanyiso Tshwaku reports from Moses Mabhida Stadium that AmaZulu and Ajax Cape Town played to a goalless draw in a sleep-inducing match yesterday.

From the champagne that was the World Cup, the flat beer that is the PSL is back, and with all indications it is here to stay.

At Dobsonville Stadium, Ramatsiyi Moholoa writes that a goal in each half by Amanda Dlamini and Leandra Smeda steer Banyana Banyana to a 2-0 victory over neighbours Namibia in a friendly.

The match was also watched by Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula and Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune.
