VETERAN defender Lucky Lekgwathi has signed for another season with Orlando Pirates.

"Lucky remains a loyal and staunch member of the club," club spokesman Mickey Modisane said in reference to the 38-year-old player from Ga- Rankuwa, who has spent over a decade at the Buccaneers.

"We are happy to have him among us. We hope that he continues to teach youngsters how to conduct themselves as professionals. Lucky has been a true ambassador for the club."

Lekgwathi is arguably Pirates' most successful captain, having led them to six trophies in two seasons. He was also instrumental in ending the club's eight-year league drought.

Pirates' assistant coach Eric Tinkler described Lekgwathi as someone with huge influence in the club.

"Lucky is a fantastic professional and a true role model. Really, I take my hat off for him to what he has achieved as a player and captain. At 38, he will continue doing so. I retired at 37," said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder. Asked if a soccer player can really go beyond 38, Tinkler said John "Shoes" Moshoeu played when he was over 40.

"It is difficult really to tell. It depends on how you feel as an individual. Lucky is the first one to arrive at training. I think he will go on until he is 45 judging by the manner in which he conducts himself."

Modisane also announced that the club was still waiting for the work permit of Senegalese midfielder Issa Sarr who has just joined Pirates from Platinum Stars. Pirates open their league schedule with a home clash against Swallows on Saturday.
