Not Tso lucky, Vilakazi

FORMER Orlando Pirates midfielder Bennedict "Tso" Vilakazi has been offloaded by Botswana Premiership side BMC for poor performance and alleged misconduct.

Vilakazi struggled to hold down a regular place after joining BMC on a season-long contract in November.

He only managed a few substitute appearances for the club and BMC coach Daniel Nare was not satisfied with the former Bafana Bafana midfielder's contribution to the team, prompting him to release him.

Nare confirmed releasing Vilakazi, but would not disclose the reasons, saying it was between the club and the player.

"We released Tso on Monday and I would not want to go into details of what led to that decision. We agreed to part ways with him and he is no longer part of us," Nare told Sowetan yesterday.

Nare had earlier said that in future he would opt for young players. When signing Vilakazi, Nare said he expected him to guide his youthful side.

However, a club official, who refused to be named, said apart from poor performance, Vilakazi was misleading young players at the club.

"We expected Tso to be exemplary to the youngsters after what he has gone through in his career, but we were disappointed to hear young players were now smoking all sorts of things with him in the forefront," the official said.

BMC signed a stranded Vilakazi after the club that brought him to Botswana, Notwane, failed to pay his salary for three consecutive months. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) then facilitated his release, along with former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Manqoba "Shakes" Ngwenya. Ngwenya has settled in well at Township Rollers and is a regular starter for the Botswana log leaders.

Vilakazi dismissed the misconduct allegations. He said he would stick around in Botswana to look for a new club, with Notwane said to be keen to bring him back.

"I am sorting out a few papers while I wait to see if there will be any offers coming my way. If there are no offers, I will go back home," said Vilakazi, adding that he was not aware of Notwane's interest.

Meanwhile, former Pretoria University striker Nqobile Mpala has since replaced Vilakazi at BMC.
