DEADLY: Bafana's Hlompho Kekana

HLOMPHO Kekana's incredible strike to shoot Bafana Bafana into the lead against Mozambique in Saturday's 3-1 win at Cape Town Stadium was not a hit and hope attempt.

The Mamelodi Sundowns hardman is not a regular for Bafana when all the Europe-based stars are called-up, so only those who follow him at club level will know that his long-range strike was not a fluke.

He has hammered home a few of these over the past few years - even during his days at Bloemfontein Celtic.

Last season, Kekana scored three times in 26 matches for the Brazilians and one of his strikes was just a classy as his stunner for Bafana at the weekend.

"Sometimes it does not work, but I am really glad this time it went in to give us the lead," he said after Bafana's Group A clash in the African Nations Championships.

"I've been doing this since I was playing in the lower ranks and it is even better when it goes in and the team wins."

Kekana now has three goals in 10 matches for the senior national team - all scored from the distance.

He is a rare pick for the Bafana selectors when the big boys are around, but South Africa now knows what to expect from the man who, two seasons ago, struck seven goals when Sundowns put 24 goals past Powerlines FC - a team from Northern Cape who are playing in the fourth tier.
