ORLANDO Pirates' 3-1 victory against Mpumalanga Black Aces to reach the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals was a timely confidence boost ahead of their sojourn into Africa to play Esperance Sportive de Tunis, said coach Roger de Sa.

Pirates face Esperance in Tunisia on October 19 in the second leg of their Caf Champions League semi-final. Bucs and Esperance drew 0-0 at the weekend.

The Buccaneers have struggled to score goal s going into Tuesday night's Telkom Cup last-16 fixture at Mbombela Stadium.

Clive Barker's fired-up Aces gave Pirates nervous moments in an end-to-end first half, but Bucs raised their game in the second for an ultimately convincing win.

"The good thing is we ... kept knocking the ball around and all the goals we scored were from a build-up and patience," De Sa said.

"It was a confidence builder and something to take with us to Tunisia."

Meanwhile, De Sa and his Kaizer Chiefs counterpart Stuart Baxter appear to have escaped punishment after making utterances that were deemed to have brought the Premier Soccer League (PSL) into disrepute last month.

The two coaches blasted referee Daniel Bennett for his handling of the MTN8 semi-final clash between the two sides at Orlando Stadium last month. But the PSL seemingly did not pick up the criticism shown live on television.

PSL communications head Connie Motshumi said yesterday: "There is nothing that has come through to the office of the prosecutor regarding that matter ."

Yet Bloemfontein Celtic ex-coach Clinton Larsen and Free State Stars mentor Steve Komphela were duly charged and fined after criticising referees on TV recently.
