CHIPPA United have received a massive boost to their survival chances after being granted permission to play all their remaining home games this season at the Philippi Stadium.

Because of concerns over the lighting at their regular home venue, the PSL's bottom side has had to use the Athlone Stadium for matches so far this campaign - bar a few daytime games that were allowed in Philippi.

The Cape Town club had complained bitterly about being disadvantaged by not being to take matches into the township and closer to their support base.

But after an inspection by the PSL last week, the club has been given the green light to play all games at a stadium they believe will provide an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams.

"I tested and analysed the lights at the Philippi Stadium last week and they now meet our requirements," the PSL's Ronnie Schloss told Sowetan. "We therefore have given the club the go-ahead to start using it for night matches.

"The lights were the only outstanding issue, though they will still have to do certain additions to the stadium on match days to accommodate the TV cameras," he said.

Schloss confirmed that the capacity of the stadium would be a concern for any so-called Category-A games featuring the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, but the Chilli Boyz have none of these to face in the rest of the campaign.

Chippa's remaining home matches this season are against Lamontville Golden Arrows (April 3), Moroka Swallows (April 17), Ajax Cape Town (April 24) and University of Pretoria (May 11).
