AJAX Cape Town will once again send their Under-19 side to the prestigious Copa Amsterdam tournament in May, where they will compete against some of the world's top clubs.

The Urban Warriors' youngsters have competed in the event since 2007 and have always given a good account of themselves, their best finish being third place in that inaugural year.

This time they will be up against mother club Ajax Amsterdam, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Brazilian sides Cruzeiro and Fluminense, and Germany's Borussia Mönchengladbach. An eighth team will be added soon.

"It is always important for us to compete in overseas tournaments because that is how you gauge your progress in development," said Ajax Cape Town chief executive George Comitis.

"It is a higher level of football and that is where you want to benchmark yourself.

"Our Under-19 side competes in the Safa Second Division so they are generally always playing against older adults. You can't really judge them.

"But against top European and South American teams in the same age group we will be able to see where we are placed."

Last year the Ajax U-19s took Travis Graham, Keegan Dolly and Musa Lebusa to the Copa Amsterdam and all have gone on to feature in the PSL this season. It also gives the youngsters a chance to impress mother club Ajax Amsterdam.

l The Copa Amsterdam will be played on the weekend of May 18-20.
