A VEIL of secrecy has been drawn over allegations of bribery against Asamoah Gyan, the captain of Africa Cup of Nations semifinalists Ghana.

Following his team's 3-0 win over Niger in their Group B match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Gyan was accused of offering Koffi, defender for the Menas, more than R177000 to throw the match.

Gyan and the Ghana Football Association have since denied the allegations, releasing a statement ahead of their quarterfinal clash against Cape Verde, which they won 2-0 at the same venue, saying the accusations were "irresponsible, reckless and mischievous".

The report about Gyan and Dankwa - long-time acquaintances from the national team junior ranks - surfaced in Ghana last week and was carried by Ghana News Agency and Radio Gold.

Dankwa is Ghanaian by birth, but opted to play for Niger after he was ignored by the Black Stars technical team. In the very same match that is being subjected to the bribery claim, Dankwa saw his early goal in the first half disallowed.

"We wish to state emphatically that (the) report is false, irresponsible, reckless and mischievous," said the Ghana Football Association.
